Executive & Strategic Communications for Mayo Clinic

Context

Mayo Clinic is a trust-based organization. Accuracy, restraint, and credibility are non-negotiable. The experts who contribute to its communications operate at the highest level — and they expect the same from the editorial process that supports them.

My Role

My role was to serve as a senior editorial partner, collaborating with subject-matter experts, clinicians, executives, and operational leaders to shape complex ideas about healthcare transformation into clear, credible narratives for internal and external audiences.

Results

I filled gaps across executive and enterprise communications teams, serving as an outside editorial partner for teams with limited resources and fast-moving comms cycles. With the Bold.Foward. strategic plan in full force, I developed multiple frameworks and communication plans and supported major change initiatives.

Launched first-ever enterprise nursing communication strategy

  • Delivered a communications tour for the chief nursing officer, including a core strategic infographic and supporting materials that connected the strategy to staff outcomes.

  • Built the full supporting system for the tour — messaging frameworks, toolkits, and templates — equipping frontline nursing leaders with consistent, ready-to-use executive messaging.

  • Elevated quarterly nursing all-staff meetings by integrating strategic themes and highlighting staff examples of the strategy in action.

  • Shaped the communications for Mayo Clinic's first AI Summit for nursing and staff innovators.

Strengthened enterprise executive communications during periods of transformation and change

  • Served as an embedded editorial partner to senior leaders, developing executive messaging, strategic memos, and talking points for multiple enterprise initiatives.

  • Built executive messaging playbooks, including voice frameworks, review standards, crisis response guidance, and materials supporting leadership transitions.

  • Participated in enterprise crisis communications workgroups, shaping executive correspondence during reputation-sensitive events.

  • Supported leadership transitions and time-sensitive executive comms used in leadership updates.

Advised new consulting leadership on enterprise narrative and external positioning

  • Advised new executive director on how to position services and capabilities during a departmental restructure, shaping messaging frameworks and value propositions used across external communications.

  • Set editorial direction for external website and consulting materials, ensuring the voice reflected Mayo's enterprise credibility and multidisciplinary expertise.

  • Served as an editorial advisor on outgoing consulting proposal, strengthening clarity around outcomes, results, and value propositions.
